Asked about his wealth, a Bedouin once pointed to a palm tree, saying, “Its fronds are fuel, its trunk is shade, its fibre is rope, its bark makes containers, and its dates are nourishment.” The palm in question is the date palm. And for more than 6000 years, our relationship with this tree has been a model of what sustainable consumption looks like.
It is no wonder, then, that the date palm inspired one of our most beloved shirt designs, Mtende. 'Mtende' is what the Swahili call this incredible tree. It’s also the name of a classic shirt on whose design it features greatly.
The Tree of Life

Humans domesticated date palms around 5000 BC. And it’s no wonder. The tree yields a sweet and delicious fruit despite growing in hot, harsh conditions. This fruit has nourished communities deep in the Sahara, along the Nile, in the Arabian Desert, and on the Swahili coast for ages.
Dates were the primary source of sweetness long before sugar was invented. They would be pressed into a syrup or processed into molasses to be added to food and drink. The fruit itself continues to be valued for its nutritional value and instant energy.
It’s not all about food, however. People have found great use for the whole tree. Its leaves, for example, were used as roofing and fuel for fires, while its trunks were valued as a construction material up until the mid-20th century.
Did you know the first mosque in history was built with wood cut from a date palm? Also, according to Christian tradition, branches of date palms (considered symbols of victory) were laid on Jesus’ path during his triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
It’s no wonder that in certain parts of the world, the date palm is commonly referred to as the “Tree of Life". Here in Kenya, the fruit is known as 'tende', and the plant is 'mtende'. Tende remains a popular delicacy, but mtende’s value as a construction material has greatly diminished.
Still, its rich heritage and lessons in sustainability remain a vital part of the identity of Kenya’s coastal communities and were more than enough to inspire one of our shirt designs, named after the Swahili name for the tree – Mtende.
The Mtende Men’s Shirt
Dates in Kenya are most popular in the coastal region. Here, date palms grow in groves, often not far from a beach, their long trunks and broad leaves forming a striking part of the skyline. This is the scene we had in mind when working on the Mtende design.

The shirt pays homage to the mtende tree and its millennia-long relationship with humans. Crafted from ethically sourced organic cotton, it features a crisp white cotton construction, reminiscent of sun-drenched beaches, beautifully contrasted with vibrant, artfully rendered palm prints.
Doesn’t that sound like something you’d want in your wardrobe? Embrace the legacy of the 'Tree of Life' by getting a Mtende Shirt.
